United Nations Removes Restrictions on Syria's Leader Prior to White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit next week.
He was appointed transitional president after leading a revolutionary movement that drove out Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, concluding over a decade of internal conflict.
America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to UN sanctions as the leader of the Muslim faction the HTS movement, once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of global extremist entities in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of Arab nations.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria before he cut connections during 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the US during this period. In September, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
