The Thunder's star player delivered the game-winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in double OT, securing the champions a positive start.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points of his own, was instrumental together with the game's hero.

"Determination and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Before the tip-off, the team's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the players were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the chance to get some payback on this Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
