Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australian ODI Squad Against India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-game ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a shock inclusion.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now work towards a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia look for a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
