Trans documentarian Sam Feder's recent film "Increased Examination" provides a powerful two-part viewpoint – both an intimate profile of a prominent trans activist and a pointed analysis of media reporting about trans existence.

Legal Battle at the Supreme Court

The film traces ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he prepares for legal presentations in the significant Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary ultimately ruling in support of Tennessee's position, practically enabling bans on healthcare for trans young people to stay in place across numerous US states.

We created Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, explained Feder during a discussion. Meanwhile, my previous film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was quite rushed. Our purpose was to stimulate conversation so people would know more about the case.

Human Story Amid Political Battle

While Feder presents a thorough examination of how prominent news organizations have promoted anti-trans rhetoric, the film's most valuable achievement may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Typically a measured attorney in media appearances, Strangio displays his vulnerability throughout the documentary.

This represented a major challenge, to reveal parts of my life to a documentary crew that I had worked hard to keep private, shared Strangio. Feder explained he wanted the next generation to know that we tried, to see what was done in support of these fights for our basic existence.

Varied Perspectives in the Movement

To enhance Strangio's account, Feder features various transgender advocates, including prominent figures from activism and entertainment. This production also includes viewpoints from non-trans supporters who examine how respected publications have contributed to damaging portrayals of trans people.

The viewpoint of transgender young people key to the court battle is shown through a remarkable 12-year-old activist named Mila. Audiences initially witness her speaking out for her community at a school board meeting, with later footage showing her demonstrating for trans rights outside the Supreme Court.

Intimate Scenes Beyond the Courtroom

This film also features poignant moments where Feder moves beyond the constant political struggle, including sequences of Strangio traveling in Italy and getting a tattoo featuring words from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."

This ink sequence is among my most cherished sections in the movie, shared Strangio. Getting inked is almost like a reflective experience for me, to be fully present in my body and to think of it as a vessel for things that are important to me.

Body Identity and Portrayal

Feder's attention to lovingly showing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection highlights that Heightened Scrutiny is fundamentally about trans physical selves – not just those of youth who confront restriction of their ability to live truly in their own bodies, but also the physical forms of the many interviewees who are featured in the film.

I create films with a meaning, and part of that is choosing people who are brilliant and concise enough to sustain the camera, stated Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my response is anything that makes you feel hot. This is essential to me – as trans people, we face challenges so much with our self-perception.

Legacy and Hope

One aspect that causes Feder's works stand out is his evident ability for making his transgender subjects feel at ease, seen and valued. This approach creates genuine connection between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to accomplish his goal of showing Strangio as a multifaceted person and providing a document for coming generations of how persistently he and others have fought for trans rights.

I hope not people to find themselves in a state of perpetual despair because of what the law is not giving us, explained Strangio. I strive to be in a method of using the law to minimize harm, but not to turn it into some kind of conduit for our liberation possibilities. The government is not going to be the mirror through which we view ourselves. Our community are that reflection, and it's very important that we keep having that discussion together with dialogues about pushing against these regulations and practices.
